Steve finds success with Work Routes in Cornwall

Steve joined Work Routes in our Cornwall office in 2019 and although he had some mental health and physical concerns, he was determined to find a role in the hospitality or care industry. Here’s his story on how we helped him achieve his goal.

Steve’s goals

When Steve first joined Work Routes, he had been out of work for some time and wanted help to find a suitable role. He had recently undergone surgery for a back injury and following his surgery, he was suffering from low mood and anxiety.

Steve’s goal was to work in either hospitality or care. However, with his current physical and mental health, he wasn’t ready to apply to roles in these areas. When Steve met his Employment Adviser, Gary, things started to change.

Gary discussed Steve’s work history and helped him identify what training courses and workshops he could take to boost his chances of obtaining a job.

Dress for Success and Inspire courses

The first thing Gary recommended Steve to do was to attend our programme called Dress for Success. Our in-house trainer, Claire, gave him invaluable advice on how to make a great first impression and how he should present himself at interviews.

As part of Dress for Success, Steve was taken to purchase new interview clothing and to a hairdressers to ensure he looked smart for his upcoming interviews.

Steve also attended a 4-day long course called Inspire which specifically helps people who have been out of work for a long period of time due to health conditions. This course gave him advice on how to manage his health conditions whilst in employment.

Steve’s success in finding a job

After attending these courses, Steve identified 3 companies that he’d love to work for. He had the opportunity to approach them at our Redruth and Camborne Job Fair.

With Gary’s guidance, he had already prepared an application form for a care provider and created two tailored sector specific CVs; one for care and the other for retail. He felt confident he could impress the employers at the fair.

Not only did he impress them, he secured 4 interviews and received 3 job offers! He has now secured a job in a Quality Control Team which he feels he has the opportunity to make his own.

Steve keeps in touch with Gary in his new job and knows he can ask for his support in handling any concerns or anxieties he may have. He also received In Work Support to help him cover travel expenses for his first month in work.

We’re extremely proud of Steve and all that he has achieved so far and wish him the best of luck for his future career.
